Professional EngineersIn order to be licensed by the Commonwealth as a Professional Engineer, one must have a 4-year engineering degree, have passed the Engineer-in-Training Exam (now called the Fundamentals of Engineering Exam), have worked as an engineer (doing design work, performing engineering calculations, etc.) for another 4 years, and have passed the 8-hour Professional Engineers Exam in a specialized field of engineering. Professional Engineers are legally qualified to render opinions in technical matters, such as the condition of the roof on a house you are considering for purchase. Or the workmanship of the electrical wiring inside the panel box. Or the manner in which a hot water tank was plumbed. Engineers who work in industry are not required to be licensed PEs. But unless they have attained special training, they are not permitted to inspect homes. Other Kinds of Home InspectorsOther Home Inspectors may have general training in performing inspections, or they may have attained practical experience by working as a carpenter, electrician, or plumber. Many such inspectors are capable and qualified to perform home inspections. You could hire an electrician to inspect your gas furnace, or a carpenter to inspect your electrical panel, or a plumber to inspect your framing. Or you could hire us and receive an engineering report. | ||
